Ischia is an island in the Bay of Naples, in southern Italy. It is known for volcanic scenery, thermal springs, sandy beaches, and good local cuisine. Many visitors find Ischia quieter than some nearby islands.
Spring is a good time for hiking and visiting gardens, with mild weather. Summer is best for swimming and beach days, but July and August are the busiest months. September and October bring warm sea water and smaller crowds. In winter, the island is calm, and many thermal spas stay open.
There is no airport on the island. Most visitors fly to Naples and continue by ferry or hydrofoil from Naples or Pozzuoli. Arriving in the morning gives you plenty of time to catch a boat.
Boats arrive at Ischia Porto and Casamicciola, while Forio is served only by fast hydrofoils. Choose the port closest to your hotel to save time on the island. Bad weather can affect sailings, especially in winter, so flexible travel times help.
Each area has its own style. Ischia Porto has good transport links and lively evenings, so it suits first-time visitors. Forio offers long beaches, historic streets, and sunsets. Sant’Angelo is a quiet village with pedestrian streets, and Casamicciola is known for wellness hotels and thermal baths.
The island has a good bus network. A car gives more freedom, but roads are narrow and winding, and parking is limited in busy coastal areas. Only some ferries carry cars, while hydrofoils carry passengers only. In summer, vehicle rules for non-residents can be strict, so check them before you plan to bring a car.
The Aragonese Castle is one of the island’s best-known landmarks. For panoramic views, hike up Mount Epomeo, and take a boat trip to reach small coves along the coast. Guided walking tours explain the history and old streets.
Local wines are made from grapes grown in volcanic soil. Day trips by boat to Procida and Capri are also possible.
Bring swimwear, as the island’s thermal pools and spas are a major part of the experience. Comfortable walking shoes are useful, since many old streets have uneven stone surfaces. Evenings in spring and autumn can be cool, so pack a light jacket.
Carry some cash for small cafés, markets, and family-run shops. In summer, book transport, accommodation, and popular activities in advance.
